Guide

How Stage Prompter works, start to show day. Tap a heading to open it.

1 Prepare a show2 Word Lab3 Keyboard4 The script5 Show day6 Saving & backups7 Settings
1 · Prepare a show

New show on the home screen → give it a name → load the MP3 (or WAV) and paste or type the script. Everything is stored in the browser on this device; see section 6 for keeping it safe.

Script format the parser understands (one line per cue, a blank line between is fine):

[MUSIC] Pastor's Pals theme, 27 sec.
SAMUEL: Hello, boys and girls! It's me, Samuel.
[ROD: hand to chest]
SAMUEL: (Gulps.) Just me. All by myself.
KING (V.O.): Hear my command!
[SFX] thunder
## Scene 2

NAME: starts a spoken line (the name becomes a colour chip). [MUSIC] / [SFX] attach to the next line as a note (after the last line they attach below it); [ROD: …] attaches to the line before it. A leading (…) is a stage direction and is not timed. ## Heading and Status: lines are ignored. Music and rod notes can be shown or hidden in Settings → Notes.

Fix audio. Word Lab checks the MP3 when it opens. Variable‑bitrate MP3s without a seek table make jumps land in the wrong place; the green strip tells you, and Fix audio converts the file to WAV inside the app so every seek is exact.

2 · Timing in Word Lab
‹ Prev WORD LAB · line 14 of 40 SCRIPT ⤓ Backup Save Next › ✓ audio health · Fix audio Show lead · Set lead 0 · Start sync meter · ▶ Preview as show · Skip to voice › Now,▶ tap Babylon2:51.10 had2:51.40 a· king.2:49.00 orange = next to tapwhite = live (being spoken)green = stampedred = out of order timeline: dots are stamps (drag one to move it) · white line = clock −30s −10s −1s −¼ ▶ +¼ +1s +10s +30s 2:50.3 Undo tabs: Word · Shift timing · Playback (speed, loop, options) · Line · Done

Rehearse opens Word Lab on your current line. Press play, and tap each word the instant you hear it. The orange tile is the next word to tap; tapping the last word moves to the next line automatically (Playback tab → Auto‑advance). Tap a green word to re‑time it. Prev / Next move between lines; leaving a line sets its end time from the last word.

Every word is its own button (Playback tab) is the default. Turned off, tiny words are grouped with their neighbours so there are fewer taps.

Speed. Buttons 0.1 → 1× plus a slider for anything in between; tap the readout to snap back to 1×. Below about 0.5× the voice is stretched and consonants smear, so 0.75–0.9× is the sweet spot for precision. Natural pitch lets the voice drop in pitch instead, for browsers that go silent at very slow speeds.

Skip to voice › jumps past a song or a pause to where speech starts again (about ¼ s before). Use it whenever a line follows music. Tap again if it stops on singing.

Hold a word about half a second to open its popover:

−.052:51.10 +.05 ▶ From here Stamp now Clear word Clear from here → Select range… Undo ✕ hold a word ~½ s to open this

Stamp now stamps it at the clock · −.05 / +.05 nudge it · ▶ From here plays from its stamp · Clear word, Clear from here → (this word to the end of the line), Select range… (tap the last word of the range, then clear or nudge the whole range) · Undo. You can also hold and slide a word left/right to drag its time, or drag a dot on the timeline.

Live word. While playing, the word being spoken lights white and the tiles scroll by rows to keep it (or the next tap) on screen. Press ↓ to re‑stamp the live word at the clock, ↑ for the one before it: scrub back, listen, press ↓ on the beat.

Loop this line repeats the line so you can refine it. Shift timing tab moves every stamp in a scope (This line · From here → = this line to the end · Section = from a marked line up to here · Whole show) by 0.05–0.3 s per tap; the label beside the scope shows exactly which lines will move. Hear the word before it lights → minus; see it first → plus. the Measure my lag tool estimates your reaction delay and Apply lag pulls all stamps earlier by that amount.

Check timings (Word Lab lower row, or ⋯ in the show) lists lines whose stamps are out of order (red tiles) or whose start doesn't match the first word. Tap a result to jump there and re‑tap the red word.

Lead & sync. Show lead is a head start applied only in the show (Settings → Timing). With word‑level stamps you want 0; the Set lead 0 button does that. Start sync meter listens to the actual speaker output at 1× and reports “Clock vs ears” (with the device's audio buffer it corrected for) so you can tell whether the device is playing late; tap the reading to stop it, and it stops by itself when you leave Word Lab. ▶ Preview as show plays this line exactly as the show will; tap the screen → ⋯ → Rehearse brings you back.

4 · The script

SCRIPT (next to the Word Lab badge) opens a read‑only list of every line with its status: ✓ timed · · needs timing · ⚠ out of order. It opens on your current line; tap any line to open it in Word Lab. Nothing is changed by opening it.

Edit (top right of that view, or Edit script at this line in Word Lab) opens the text editor scrolled to your line. When you Save, unchanged lines keep their timings, changed words lose only their own stamps, and new lines come in untimed. The previous version is kept: Restore previous script in Word Lab brings it back.

Every page shares one current line, so Word Lab, the Script view, the editor and the show always open where you left off.

5 · Show day

Open the show → Play. The script scrolls at speaking pace and each word fills as it is spoken (Settings → Show display: sweep or jump, now bar, cursor, font size, skins). Scrolling with a finger never seeks the audio; a tap only shows or hides the controls bar. ⋯ opens the menu (Rehearse, Edit, Script, Check timings, Export, Settings, Exit).

The bar shows a running clock; while paused and scrolled it shows the time and number of the line at the now position instead (yellow), which is where Play will start.

Hold to pause. While playing, press and hold anywhere on the script for half a second: the show pauses and you can scroll. Tap a line while paused and it plays from that line (1 s run‑in). A short tap while playing still just shows the controls.

Paused = rehearsal mode. While the show is paused you can scroll the script, and the line sitting at the now position (the centre unless you moved the now bar) gets a yellow edge with “▶ from L14” over the Play button: pressing Play starts the audio 1 s before that line, with its cues firing as in the show. Pause and play again without scrolling, and it simply resumes.

While paused, the bar also shows a tools row: ⏮ Start (back to 0:00, top of the script), Cues, Word Lab here (opens Word Lab on the line at the now position; Done returns to the show), A− / A+ text size, the Lead chip (tap to cycle 0 / 0.25 / 0.50 / 0.75), and ⤓ backup. It disappears as soon as you press Play.

The screen is kept awake the whole time the show screen is open (a system wake lock, re‑acquired whenever the phone drops it; a silent hidden video as fallback where the lock isn't allowed). If the screen ever dims anyway, check the phone's battery saver, which overrides both.

📷 Camera (paused tools row) shows the camera behind the script (Full screen, with a Script backdrop slider from see‑through to solid) or in a small Corner window you can drag to any corner. Front/Rear, Flip and Mirror are in the same panel. With the camera on, ● Rec appears on the control bar: it records the camera plus the show audio (and your mic if chosen) and saves PRACTICE - show - date.webm to Downloads when you tap ■ Stop rec. The script itself is not in the video. Camera mode needs the web address (mykegeter.github.io/stage-prompter), not a copy opened from Downloads.

Text‑only shows work like a news teleprompter: tap 📷 on the control bar, choose Full screen, and the words scroll over the camera with the reading line near the top, close to the lens. Pick the mic under Mic for recording (phone mic or a connected Bluetooth mic; tap ↻ after connecting one). ● Rec counts 3‑2‑1, then starts recording and scrolling. On the open Fold the words move to the right half, under the lens (Camera panel → Words under camera).

🎬 Studio (on each take): replace a green screen, or use AI cutout — for people only. Key tab: 💧 Tap the green, then Similarity / Smoothness / Green spill; Matte view shows white = kept, black = replaced; save presets. Background tab: colours, gradients or your own photo/video, blur and light wrap. Edges: shrink/grow outline, brightness, contrast. Crop: drag a box to keep. Make video saves a new “✨ Studio version” take (MP4 by default) and keeps the original. The Camera panel's 🟩 Green screen setting uses the same settings live: Preview shows the background but records the plain camera; Record with background builds it into the take.

Home page: shows are grouped into 🎵 Puppet shows and 📝 Text scripts (tap a header to fold it). Tap any show to open its page: play your practice takes, ⤓ Save one to Downloads, ✕ delete, or + Add video. Every ● Rec take is kept with its show in this app on this device — clearing Edge's site data would erase takes you haven't saved.

⛶ on the control bar toggles fullscreen at any time. ⟲ Sync on the control bar re-seats the display clock on the audio if the phone ever hiccups. With Auto-resync on (Settings → Timing) the show listens to the speaker and applies that correction by itself; stamps are never touched, and a corner note can show each correction.

Show cues. Warnings for yourself, separate from the script timings: an upcoming character change (made automatically from the script) or your own note ("wiggle Samuel", "fog on"). Add one in Word Lab with C at the clock, with + Cue before this line, or in the script as [CUE: get KING on right hand] ([CUE 5s: …] sets its own warn‑ahead) on the line before it applies. The Cues tab (and ⋯ → Cues in the show) slides up the full list: tick/untick, edit the note, set warn‑ahead and style per cue. On the show screen, while paused, press and hold a character pill to add a cue before that line or manage the cues on it, and hold a ROD or ♪ note to turn it into a cue (a ♪ cue fires when the music starts, at the end of the line before it; a ROD cue at its line's start); text and blank space do nothing. While a cue is showing, press and hold the banner, card or the glow's label to hide that cue, stop warning for that character, warn earlier/later, edit it, change its style, or dismiss it for now. Style is layered: a cue's own style wins, then the show's style (top of the Cues sheet), then the default in Settings → Show cues; Settings shows a note when the open show overrides it. Banner (top or bottom strip with countdown), Edge glow (frame pulses in the character's colour, small label in a corner of your choice), Inline (a coloured rule in the script above the line it belongs to; a cue with only a time and no line shows as a card instead), Card (small card in a corner of your choice).

Before the first show on a new device: open Word Lab once so the audio check runs, confirm Show lead is 0, and play a line with ▶ Preview as show.

6 · Saving & backups

Auto‑save. Every tap, nudge, clear and line change writes the show to this device immediately; the green Saved ✓ time in Word Lab updates each time. Save writes it again on demand.

⤓ Backup (Word Lab, Script editor, and the arrow on each home card) writes two dated files named by type first, SCRIPT - name - date.txt (readable script) and BACKUP (timings+settings) - name - date.json (the full show) (script + every timing + settings). On a PC, Settings → Backups → Choose folder once and backups go straight into that folder; on phones they go to Downloads. Backup all does every show.

Export (home card ⇪ or ⋯ menu) writes just the .json, the file to move a show to another device. Import .json or Paste JSON on the home screen brings it in, settings included. The audio itself is not in the file: on the new device you will be asked to Re‑link audio once.

Everything lives inside the browser on this device. Clearing site data or losing the phone loses it, so back up after each timing session; the home screen shows when you last did.

7 · Settings

Show display: skin, font size, now bar position, word fill style, cursor, controls layout. Notes: show or hide music and rod notes. Timing: lead time, measured lag. Controls: what a tap does in rehearsal, clicker keys. Text‑only mode: scroll speed for scripts without audio. Backups: folder and Backup all. Advanced: debug readout.
